The development of new haptic technologies suggests innovative prospects for user assistance in Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): The computer can mechanically guide the user's hand towards different targets on the screen. This paper aims to bringing some basic principles on how such an assistance should be provided. It is divided in two separate parts.
Firstly, it is argued that current help systems are usually not adapted to GUIs, and that in terms of efficiency, the optimal way to provide assistance is visual-haptic guidance.
Secondly, the emotional characteristics of haptic guidance are investigated, thanks to an idea-generating group. This allows us to propose some guidelines for the design of an appropriate metaphor underlying an advanced haptic-guidance-based help system.
